Re: A new order_ rediscovered vitality

What is <Re:> that Hwang Na-young discusses in this exhibition? It would be a story about positive vitality in which something or someone, everything that is the subject, is regenerated and has new values and concepts. 'Pleat' and 'hole' have been founded as traces of multiple existences in Hwang Na-young's works. In this exhibition, the artist selects a daily object called a “shopping bag” to show the situation of dismantling and reconstruction until the original thing loses its functional meaning on the canvas. Then, it acquires the value newly assigned by the artist, stimulating our universal sympathy.

 

Step 1. Relationship: becoming familiar, drawing & accept

As a process of dismantling and rebuilding, first, it shows the process of becoming friendly with a shopping bag. The artist dismantled many shopping bags to “know” the object of the shopping bag. The artist recognized that even if the material, pattern, and shape were different, they were all uniformly developing rectangular parallelepiped planer figures after dismantling. And yet, she did not overlook the process of dismantling, sometimes destroying, and accepting the unique identity of the object that breathes other vitality. The artist puts the object on the board of reconstruction called canvas and sets the point of time when it becomes art a little later. Firstly, experiments entirely on the principle of accidental drawing and distribution of power. For example, one side of a shopping bag was cut and drawn with a knife, maintaining traces of acrylic paint leaking through the duck's cracks and its unique characteristics.

 

Step 2. Re: A new order, re-established solidity

‘Regenerated shopping bag’ obtained by the artist’s formative language is no longer used to lock or shift the consumer values. Instead, the artist gives a solid castle that never collapses without deviating from the new order_ stable sphere pattern and electrostatic material acrylic paint_ The canvas repeats order and transformation on the stage and plays a new game. This object which acquired 'true freedom' that can be transformed into a new form, even serves as a feast that reveals various sculptural languages such as scratching, stamping, sometimes locking in plaster, and filling and ripping it off hardboard paper.

The artist's selection and re-creation process is widely discussed within the 'reality and creation' category. The works of 'shopping bag' and 'beaker' demonstrated by the artist in this exhibition were simplified or coded. Still, it is an ontological subject created by longing for a more expanded space. It is a paradoxical and ideological collage that creates "infinite value" in various molding languages in extended time and space, away from the "limited value" surrounding functional and consumption values, and a positive variation that embraces its own identity and injects new vitality. The artist hopes that her perspective and efforts to communicate more personal and relational communication can be fully conveyed, even if it is not perfect communication between the objects.
